Emergency room nurse, Alyssa Brown, and her firefighter husband, Zach Brown, came up with a way to make access to car roofs easier. Their Moki DoorStep is a simple, and innovative solution so short people can access their car roofs.

The Moki DoorStep simply attaches to the striker of the vehicle, which is standard inside most car doors. You basically just hook it on, and step up onto the step.
After a quick demonstration, and Lori Greiner also giving it a try, Robert Herjavec adds that the ingenuity in America amazes him.
All of the sharks are certainly impressed by the couple’s invention. Nonetheless, Robert then wants to know how they thought of such an innovative product.
The couple eventually share that given their careers, they’ve had to use the jaws of life to save people in car wrecks. Because of this, they knew that the car door striker has to hold up to 2200 pounds.
One day they just thought, what if we hook something onto it, for standing on. Alyssa especially needed something, because as an outdoorsy couple, she could never reach their car roof due to her height.
The sharks want to know about sales.Alyssa told the sharks that their initial Kickstarter campaign generated just over $100,000 in sales over the course of 30 days.
The landed cost per unit is just over $10 while they explored their possible product price point at various camping shows. Their product seemed to do well at around $40, according to Zach.
Although, the sharks were not pleased to hear that Zach’s uncle was currently receiving $1 per unit for nearly two decades. Apparently, the uncle went in with the couple on the initial investment, and also helped with the patent.
Kevin O’Leary believed that other companies would ultimately knock off the product, so he dropped out first.
Daymond John decided to offer $450,000 for 20% equity, a larger chunk of cash, and more equity in return.
In what would be a shocking turn of events in the S
Daymond said that he would buy 100% of the company for $3 million, and would pay the royalty to Zach’s uncle. Zach and Alyssa finally accepted the offer, to sell off the entire company.
Did everything eventually work out following
We have some good news to report in our Moki DoorStep update. It turns out that the deal never closed, so Daymond did not purchase the company after all.
Despite this, Zach and Alyssa eventually got a licensing deal with the outdoors company Rightline Gear. This led to the Moki DoorStep being sold at Dick’s Sporting Goods, REI, Duluth Trading Co, and Amazon.
However, Zach and Alyssa no longer actually manufacture the product, relying solely on their licensing deal, butwe were surprised to realize that the company website is no longer active.
That said, we found an interview with Zach on StarterStory.com, where he shares that the Rightline Gear deal has been great.
However, he also says that he spends a lot of his time protecting their product, wiping copycats off the internet.
